Bambu Lab announces authorization controls and Bambu Connect
The January firmware proposal changes how third-party tools send critical commands; a later update adds a planned developer option.

Bambu Lab announced a new authorization system for printer control on January 16, 2025. The initial plan covered X1-series firmware version 01.08.03.00 and above, with beta access scheduled for January 17. Corresponding requirements were Bambu Studio 01.10.02.64 or newer and Bambu Handy 2.17.0 or newer.[1]
The proposed checks apply to operations such as starting prints over LAN or cloud, changing temperatures, moving the printer, accessing remote video and updating firmware. Status reporting and starting a job from an SD card were listed separately as unaffected. Installing the new printer firmware therefore required compatible control software as well.
For third-party slicers, Bambu Lab introduced Bambu Connect as a separate application that sends already-sliced G-code or 3MF files and provides printer control. It was described as beta software, not a replacement slicing engine. The original announcement also said users could retain older firmware while integration work continued.
Update — January 20, 2025: Bambu Lab outlined an optional Developer Mode for advanced users of X1, P1, A1 and A1 mini, manually enabled on the printer to leave MQTT, video and FTP access open. It also said standard LAN use through Connect would require neither internet access nor an account.[2] The announced integration demonstration was still awaiting incorporation into OrcaSlicer, so it did not mean every third-party workflow was already updated.
